Chapter 12

• --------------------- •

Lacy jumped off the counter and quickly righted her shirt. “We were just…”

Sky laughed, shaking her head as she looked from Lacy to Andrew, and back again. “I have a pretty good idea what you were doing.”

Andrew chuckled. “Then there’s nothing to explain. I’ll get back to work.”

Lacy noticed Sky’s teasing smile and was mortified. She had just made out with the contractor on the first day of their renovations, and to top it off she had been caught by her partner. Embarrassed simply didn’t cover it, especially since her lips were still zinging with his taste, her skin tingling from his touch.

She cleared her throat and squared her shoulders, hoping to regain some semblance of control as she walked towards Sky. “You made it.”

Sky chuckled. “Just in time, I see.”

Lacy cringed. “About that … Have you seen the upstairs rooms?”

Of course she knew Sky had been through the entire building more than once over the last week, but she needed to get away from Andrew. Without waiting for Sky’s consent she started up the stairs. As soon as they were in the main room she opened the doors to the balcony, needing some fresh air to clear her head.

“I see you were right about me being crazy. Clearly no sexual tension between you two at all.” Sky’s mouth mockingly quirked.

Lacy let out a sigh. “Clearly.” She shook her head and looked at the roof beams, hoping to find an answer for what just happened there. “I didn’t plan on that happening.”

Sky nodded. “Honey, we usually don’t plan for these things to happen. Please don’t feel the need to justify yourself to me. We might be partners, but I’m not your keeper.”

Lacy nodded, relieved that Sky wasn’t upset. “Thanks. It just confuses me, you know? I don’t even really like him. I’ve avoided him for most of my life and now it’s as if I lose all coherent thought whenever he’s close. My mind shuts off and my body takes over. I don’t understand it.” Lacy wasn’t sure if she was asking for advice or just reasoning out loud.

“Sometimes these things don’t have to make sense.” Sky smiled and reached for Lacy’s hand. “Think of me and Riley for example. I’m an heiress with the right family name, raised in the best private schools, with more pedigree than some royalty. Riley’s from the wrong side of the tracks with a record to his name. When we met this whole town was terrified of him, but something drew me to him. I couldn’t explain it either; all I knew was that I couldn’t ignore it.”

Lacy smiled and squeezed Sky’s hand. “Everyone thought you were stuck up when you arrived.” She chuckled softly. “But you’re not. People tend to judge too easily.”

“Exactly.” Sky nodded. “Don’t judge Andrew on what you think you knew about him in high school. The way I see it is, something is brewing here and there isn’t a thunder cloud in sight.” She glanced out the window and the clear autumn sky as if to make a point.
